What Makes Moodle Special?
"We’ve both spent time researching different CMSs, and we have become fans of Moodle because it is open source, is built on a sound educational philosophy, and has a huge community that supports and develops it. " |

Moodle is a Course Management System we use to add web functionality to our training programmes. Moodle is a world-wide community of educators and learners from Harvard and MIT right across to many second level colleges here in Ireland. We like it because it allows us to interface directly with learners 24/7 to provide content, answer questions or provide project focused communication with instructors, facilitators, consultanrs and others involved in the programme.
Moodle is an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment.
The system was created by computer scientist and educator Martin Dougiamas. Through his work supporting CMS in an Austrailan university he came to realise a system built around the educational process rather than an engineering process would be much more effective for educators and learners. Moodle was his response.
According to Wikipedia (see below), Moodle has a significant user base with 46,624 registered sites with 32,464,992 users in 3,161,291 courses in 209 countries and more than 75 languages are supported (as of January 9, 2010)
